META Resource Centre Copyright Guidelines
These guidelines are a general overview of copyright of multimedia materials in educational libraries and should be used in conjunction with the University of Sydney Audio-Visual Copying and Communication Guidelines.
Television and radio broadcasts • Any program may be copied from television or radio broadcast by the MRC. Any number of copies may be made, however these programs may only be used in relation to teaching by staff or students. The media in which the information is stored is not important.
Commercial materials
• The original copy of any commercial multimedia material may be used in a classroom situation, or may be left at the META Resource Centre library for self-access use by students. Showing or using any material in a teaching or research situation is legal and no special permission is required.
• It is not legal to make a copy of such materials under any circumstances without the written permission of the copyright holder.
• The “10% rule” which applies to print media does not in general apply to audiovisual materials. No part of a set of commercial audiovisual materials may be copied without written permission or licence agreement.
• Teaching staff requiring multiple copies of commercial materials for classroom use or student self-access use must provide the META Resource Centre with written permission, in an electronic format, from the copyright holder before any copies can be made. The META Resource Centre will register and retain this licence agreement.
• Copies will not be provided until such time as the licence to copy is received.
• The manner in which copies will be provided will be strictly in accordance with the licence. If the licence specifies that cassette copies may be made then only cassette copies will be provided.
• Permission is not retrospective with regard to digitisation. If a licence is already held allowing a set of audio materials to be copied in cassette media that permission does not also allow digital copies to be made from these materials. A licence to digitise must be sought in such cases.
• The staff member requesting copies of commercial material is responsible for obtaining the licence, in English, from the copyright holder (usually the publisher). The META Resource Centre is not responsible for obtaining the licnece to copy.
