The most recent and most popular suggestion so far is WikED, by Sue Atkinson
Another suggestion was Edupedia (or ED pedia) - However, there is already a French Edupedia.eu.org about how to use Wikipedia in Schools/Education, an [www.edupedia.org Edupedia.org] site studying "school administration processes around the world" and Edupedia.com, an Indonesian site. MTB suggested SYDNEY EDUPEDIA, with the special mission of exploring how social media can be used to support/improve learning.
PEDRO was also suggested for its familiarity and its amenability to bacronyms like "Patterns and Educational Design Resources for use Online" and "Pedro's Educational Design RepOsitory" (which, of course, also has the distinction of being a recursive bacronym). Unfortunately, there's already a PEDRO at USYD. FHS has a Physiotherapy Evidence Database called PEDro.
Mr ED was also considered... briefly.
Community building
The following seven design principles for building online communities come from Etienne Wenger's Cultivating communities of practice : a guide to managing knowledge. (Boston, Harvard Business School Press, 2002)
- Design for evolution
- Open a dialogue between inside and outside perspectives
- Invite different levels of participation
- Develop both public and private community spaces
- Focus on value
- Combine familiarity and excitement
- Create a rhythm for the community
