Pattern Name - Peer Instruction

Make lectures more interactive and engaging by using MCQs and peer discussion.

Objectives

  • Keep student attention
  • Ensure an appropriate lecture pace
  • Encourage critical thinking and discussion as new ideas are introduced

Solution

  • Break the lecture up into 15-20min blocks
  • Pose multiple choice questions to the class on the material introduced at the end of each block
  • Move on, review, or discuss, depending on proportion of correct answers
    • In cases where the response is mixed, encourage students to try to convince their neighbour that theirs is the correct response, and then pose the question again.
