Pattern workshop
From Elearning
This is a space where ideas for patterns which are not yet well-formed enough for their own page can be proposed and commented on. (Don't forget to sign your comments by clicking on the signature button at the top of the edit box, or just add the following wikitext at the end of your comment: "--~~~~")
Remember that not everyone will find every pattern useful, so don't be put of by the first negative comment. For the same reason, cheerleading is very important on this page. If you think an idea is interesting, or you wouldn't have thought of doing that, say so.
To get the ball rolling, I've included my own idea for a pattern
Indirect collaboration
- "Rather than collaborating by communicating, e.g. via email or IM, students using a web document communicate by working together in a shared workspace."
Is there a pattern here - something like: "Collaboration needn't involve direct communication" or "Prefer indirect communication"? The problem/challenge might be that communication channels between students can get overloaded. If they do, privilege silent collaboration or forms of collaboration that don't involve direct communication. Web documents are one way of doing that.

Mark It Yourself
- Problem
Students are often so dissatisfied with their marks that no feedback sinks in.
- Possible Solution
Hand back essays without marks but with assessment marking guidelines. Ask students to critically consider their essays/answers, noting where they might have improved. Ask students to assign themselves a mark (not necessarily to be discussed in 'public', and that won't influence their eventual mark). Then hand the students the marks you have given them.
- Outcomes
I have found that students often anticipate their eventual marks when presented with the assessment criteria. This exercise encourages an engagement with the student's own work before they are disheartened (or, even, overly-pleased and beyond reproach). This exercise helps students relate their work to assessment criteria.
