Pattern Name - Marker's Shoes

As in: "You'll understand your marker better when you've walked a mile in their shoes".

Objective

Help students to understand what's required of them in an assessment task.

Solution

Get the students to mark an example submission from the previous semester, preferably using the same marking criteria that will be applied to their own submissions.

Alternatively, the sample need not be from a previous semester. You may create your own samples. It can be particularly useful in teaching essay writing, for example, to have the students mark an intro paragraph, or a body paragraph, or a concluding paragraph from week to week.

Further, if you create your own sample to match the required readings for any given week then the marker's shoes pattern is aligned with both assessment outcomes and course outcomes.
