What she does

As an assessment task, students go to an Indonesian restaurant with a recording device and record a series of exchanges with restaurant staff using Indonesian language. See instructions for completing the task.

The task is undertaken by 1st year students with less than a year of experience in learning the language. The recording can be done either as video or audio. No previous experience of recording is required. sound_icon.jpg

See video excerpt example of student recording (Quicktime movie 7.5MB).

The results she gets

  • Real-life language practice.
  • Boost for confidence of 1st year language students.
  • Save time by replacing oral assessment.
  • Fun for all concerned (including restaurant staff).
  • Strong motivation for very careful rehearsal of vocabulary and conversational routines. Students do not require marks to make them work hard on this task. (Assessment is pass/fail). The challenge of performing in public is all the incentive they need.
  • Stimulation of student creativity.
