What she does
As an assessment task, students go to an Indonesian restaurant with a recording device and record a series of exchanges with restaurant staff using Indonesian language. See instructions for completing the task.
The task is undertaken by 1st year students with less than a year of experience in learning the language. The recording can be done either as video or audio. No previous experience of recording is required.
See video excerpt example of student recording (Quicktime movie 7.5MB).
The results she gets
- Real-life language practice.
- Boost for confidence of 1st year language students.
- Save time by replacing oral assessment.
- Fun for all concerned (including restaurant staff).
- Strong motivation for very careful rehearsal of vocabulary and conversational routines. Students do not require marks to make them work hard on this task. (Assessment is pass/fail). The challenge of performing in public is all the incentive they need.
- Stimulation of student creativity.
