Pattern Name - Assessment Map

Problem

Getting students to work on their assessment tasks ahead of the due-date.

Description

Undergraduate students are frequently too inexperienced to understand the component steps to take or to judge the amount of work and time required to produce a good product. They may also lack time management skills.

Solution

  • Break the larger assessment task down into its component stages.
  • Make these compulsory and award marks.
  • Give feedback along the way.
  • Through doing, students begin to understand what is required and to develop good study habits.

Implementation

Each assessment task can be broken in many ways so you need to find the stages that suit your assignment and will be manageable.
Some possible stages are:
- Interpreting the assessment task
- Developing a topic or approach to a problem
- Finding and evaluating sources
- Effective reading and research
- Notetaking
- Synthesis
- Working with drafts
- Proof-reading
